Schools and clubs FAQs

About Active Kids

Why did Sainsbury's create Active Kids?

In 2005 we launched Active Kids to inspire school kids of all ages and abilities to get active. Since then, Active Kids has grown to include nurseries, clubs, Girlguiding and Scouts, who can all collect vouchers to exchange for new cooking and sports equipment, and experiences.

Eating well is just as important as moving well, so schools and clubs can now collect for a large range of cooking equipment too. We've also created a suite of Cooking and Nutrition Toolkits for teachers, endorsed by the British Nutrition Foundation, to help kids learn the importance of a balanced diet.

How successful has Active Kids been?

Thanks to the fantastic support of local communities and parents, we've provided over £170million* of cooking and sports equipment, and experiences to UK schools and clubs. Giving kids the chance to try new sports and activities like cooking, martial arts and dance.

With your help we can get even more kids to eat well, move well and live well in 2017.

*Total based on redemptions received up to 30 September 2016.

Once we've processed your first order we will re-open the checkout system, allowing you to repeat the process for your second order, including choosing to send us a second bundle of vouchers.

All vouchers and a physical copy of your order form must be sent by 28 July .

If you require another postage label, please call us on 0800 276 1111†.

†All calls to this number are free. The Active Kids helpline is open Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm (excluding public holidays).

My school/group placed an order as part of last year's scheme and we are still waiting for some of our equipment. What should I do?

If you have any specific questions regarding your order, or any of the equipment you have received, please contact the Active Kids equipment helpline on 0800 276 1111†.

†All calls to this number are free. The Active Kids helpline is open Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm (excluding public holidays).

I don't want my school or group to be featured in the local press – can we still register?

By participating in the scheme, organisations give consent to Sainsbury's to use their details in local media. Many schools over the years have received local press attention through Active Kids which has been extremely well received by both teachers and pupils.

However, if you don't want to be featured, you can decline the opportunity if contacted by Sainsbury's.

When will Active Kids 2017 deliveries be made?

All organisations that meet the order deadline of 28 July 2017 will receive their equipment by the end of October 2017.

We may deliver in installments (depending on product availability) but each delivery will have a note clearly describing its contents. If a coaching session or experience has been ordered, you will receive further details, including how to make your booking. If for any reason your order is delayed we will let you know.

Why do I have different looking vouchers this year? What do I do with them?

If you shop in Sainsbury’s Local stores you’ll still get a 1 voucher for every £5 you spend, just like last year. In Sainsbury’s Supermarkets, every time you shop in store you’ll be given one voucher for every £10 you spend at the till.

And at Sainsbury's Supermarkets self checkout and online at sainsburys.co.uk you’ll get one voucher for every £10 you spend in store, but they’ll all be printed on one piece of paper up to the value of 50 vouchers – so make sure you keep it safe.

When is the order deadline?

You must send all orders and vouchers by 28 July 2017.

So don’t leave it too late as orders after this time cannot be accepted.

Do you have a customer queries number?

Yes, you can contact the Active Kids helpline on 0800 276 1111†.

Cooking & Nutrition Toolkits

What are the Sainsbury’s Cooking and Nutrition Toolkits?

With engaging lesson plans and simple recipe suggestions, our toolkits provide teachers with a range of resources to help teach kids how to cook and learn the basics of healthy eating and nutrition.

The toolkits have been developed in collaboration with the British Nutrition Foundation and are supported by the Department for Education.

For more information, sign in and visit the nursery, primary and secondary schools pages.

How have the resources been developed for Schools and Girlguiding groups?

School resources
They have been developed to be flexible to meet the curricular needs of England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales. They support the cooking and nutrition aspects of the curriculum.

Girlguiding resources
Resources for Guides have been developed in collaboration with Girlguiding to complement their programme and ensure the scheme is beneficial to Leaders.

How will the Toolkits help my lesson/programme planning?

The Cooking and Nutrition Toolkits consist of school awards which are based on a set of criteria which helps the kids progress.

They provide lots of opportunities for nursery, primary, middle, special and secondary schools to develop food education.

The awards and certificates promote excellence in learning about food in a progressive framework, allowing young people to demonstrate their cooking skills and apply their understanding of healthy eating, food safety and hygiene.

What resources are available to enhance my lessons/programme?

Each award has a guide, giving ideas on activities that can be completed by the kids to get their certificates.

In addition, support information on healthy eating, equipment, food skills and other learning opportunities are provided, along with UK curricula links, worksheets and recipe suggestions.

Can I adapt the recipes?

The recipes are given as suggestions.

It’s expected that some children and teachers may use these as a basis for further recipe development or use them to inspire their own creativity.

Can the Toolkits be adapted for special educational needs?

Yes, the awards and toolkits are for all abilities, it is not a competition.

To help kids with special educational needs, you should use your discretion in supporting them to achieve an award and leave out the award criteria that are not appropriate because of any learning difficulties.

Is the scheme suitable for Middle schools?

You may wish to use aspects from both the Primary and Secondary Awards, as these are built around a progressive learning framework.

You can choose the most appropriate awards and resources for the abilities of the kids you teach.

Can I incorporate the scheme into an after school/breakfast club?

Yes, as long as the criteria for the Awards are covered.

How do I access the Toolkits and Active Packs?

You'll need to sign in and simply find and click on the toolkit that you’re interested in on your Active Kids organisation page.

Then, follow the instructions to complete the download.

Certificates (schools only)

Do I need to send Sainsbury’s the pupil’s marks before I order certificates?

No, you can use your own professional judgement that each child has achieved their certificate in line with the award criteria.

How will certificates be sent?

Upon submission, certificates will be delivered within 28 days. They will be sent by 2nd Class post and will not require a signature.

How do I know that my certificate order has gone through?

Once you've successfully submitted your order, you'll see a confirmation message with an order number. The account holder will also receive an email confirmation.

My certificates haven’t arrived – what can I do?

Please call the Active Kids helpline on 0800 276 1111†. We'll check the status of your order.

†All calls to this number are free. The Active Kids helpline is open Monday to Friday between 9am and 5pm (excluding public holidays).

Do I have to award certificates or can I just use the resources?

The certificates don't have to be awarded but are a great way to celebrate the success of your kids. The certificates recognise and reward their good work, while motivating them to learn more.
